Verbena bonariensis is grown for movement, height, and pollinator life. Slender, wiry stems rise well above surrounding plants and carry airy clusters of tiny purple flowers that seem to float in the garden. The open structure allows light to pass through, making it easy to layer into borders without blocking neighboring plants.
Flowering begins in summer and continues until frost, providing a steady nectar source for butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects. Despite its height, the plant remains narrow and upright, adding vertical interest without visual heaviness.
Plants typically reach 3–4 feet tall, with rough, four-angled stems and clasping leaves along the stalk. In mild climates it behaves as a perennial; in colder regions it often returns from seed, weaving itself gently into garden plantings.
