Native Edible Cactus • Medicinal Plant • Drought-Tolerant Pollinator Support

Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia humifusa) is a hardy, cold-tolerant cactus native to the Eastern United States, valued for its sculptural form, brilliant yellow flowers, and edible fruit and pads. This flat-jointed, spreading perennial forms attractive colonies and brings bold texture to xeriscapes, rock gardens, and native plantings.

In late spring to early summer, Opuntia humifusa produces showy yellow blooms that attract native bees and pollinators. These are followed by small red fruits (tunas), while the fleshy pads (nopales) are traditionally used in both culinary and medicinal preparations. Exceptionally drought tolerant once established, this cactus thrives in full sun and well-drained soil.
