This Japanese sweet flag, also known as Acorus gramineus 'Licorice', boasts fans of slender, semi-evergreen leaves measuring 6-12 inches. With a distinctly strong scent and flavor of licorice, this plant is often utilized in Asian cuisine and makes for a delightful tea herb. Its attractive tight clumps of leaves can be grown in containers or in the ground, thriving in moist soil. While native to the Northern Hemisphere, this plant can flourish in boggy or aquatic environments as well as rich, well-irrigated soil. Its flowers may be small and inconspicuous, but its presence in damp borders, pool edges, or shallow water is truly striking.
