What does herbaceous mean?
The definitions of some botanical terms used in the website
Annual - a plant that blooms and dies in its first year of growth (example: basil). We do not sell any annuals on this website.
Biennial - plants that tend to bloom and then die in their second season (example: clary sage).
Deciduous - plants that keep their woody stems throughout the year, but shed their leaves once a year, usually in the fall (example: ginkgo tree, sumac).
Evergreen - plants that keep their leaves throughout the year (lavender).
Hardy - plants that can tolerate some degrees of either heat or freezing weather, the limits of which are asssigned to them as their hardiness zones.
Herbaceous - perennial plants that die back to the ground each winter and then regrow new stems and leaves the following growing season (beebalm).
Perennial - a plant that lives for more than two seasons. All of the plants in our website are perennials, with the exception of a couple of biennials.
Tender - a plant, either annual or perennial, that does not tolerate any frost or freezing temperatures. Examples of tender perennials are the pelargoniums, which live for many years in frost-free climates or when protected indoors, but usually die when exposed to freezing temperatues.
Woody - plants that keep hard, above-ground stems throughout the year. May be deciduous or evergreen.
